What is HNBR rubber?
HNBR is a hydrogenated version of NBR (nitrile) rubber. HNBRs have better oil and chemical resistance than nitrile rubbers and can also withstand higher temperatures. HNBR rubber has excellent resistance to oils and fuels but it also has excellent resistance to many chemicals, steam / hot water and ozone. The mechanical properties e.g. tensile and tear strength, elongation, and abrasion resistance are excellent.
Properties of HNBR Rubber
These are some of the properties of HNBR rubber compounds:
Grades | Acrylonitrile content, degree of unsaturation |
Hardness Range (ShA) | 50 – 90 |
Thermal Resistance continuous/peak (°C) | 140 / 160 |
Low temperature (°C) | – 40 to – 30 |
Chemical Resistance | Apolar fluids, oils, greases, diluted acids and bases, hydraulic fluids, diluted acids and bases, sour gases, steam |
Weatherability | Ozone resistance |
Others | Excellent mechanics and resistace to abrasion |
Curing | Sulphur, peroxide |
Material processing
The manufacturing technologies of these types of compounds are the traditional compression and injection molding, extrusion, calendaring and coating process. All unsaturated elastomers are generally reticulated through sulphur, but peroxides can also be used. Those which do not have unsaturated bonds like EPM compounds can be reticulated with peroxides only. Some specialties require exclusive reticulation agents that take advantage of specific chemical properties.
What is HNBR rubber typically used for?
HNBR is widely used in automotive, industrial applications, oil and gas industries, food and pharma, and medical markets. The automotive market uses HNBR for a host of dynamic and static seals, hoses, belts, coolants, AdBlue / oil and fuel systems. HNBR has also been widely employed in industrial sealing for oil field exploration and processing, as well as rolls for steel and paper mills.
